Noise At Work
Noise at work is common in today's
world and can often be a contributing factor towards hearing loss. Noise
induced hearing loss is one such problem that arises from occupational
noise in the workplace and is the most common occupational disease in
Europe to date. Noise induced hearing loss accounts for roughly one
third of all work related diseases and ranks above both skin and
respiratory complaints. In the United Kingdom, there are some 170,000
people that suffer from ear conditions such as deafness, tinnitus or
other ear problems that are the direct result of excessive noise during
their employment. These complications are always permanent and are
caused due to the destruction of hair cells in the cochlea, this
initially results in the loss of hearing high pitched noises and can
often extend to loss of lower pitched sounds later in life.
Noise at work usually results in
noise induced hearing loss when employees are exposed to loud noise over
a prolonged period of time, but brief exposure to impulsive noise such
as loud power tools or metal on metal contact can also have permanent
effects in loss of hearing, so precaution should always be taken.
